Town and Parish Councils
The Liberal Democrats have many indivduals that serve on Town or Parish councils – in some places the councillors stand under a Liberal Democrat banner. In others, by convention, because the organisations were essentially apolitical, they stood as unassigned or independent individuals. The experience of other unitary authorities show us that the likelihood is that most discretionary spending will be handled at this lower level - council precepts are unconstrained by central government and allow councils to raise extra funds for local amenities. This suggests that in future many of these councils will become more politicised.
Town and Parish councils sit are the lowest and smallest level of local government, encompassing local decisions such as allotments, local parks, bus shelters and more. This does not mean they are unimportant, rather they are responsible for many of the local changes that people can see in their local area.
