“Tories can not whitewash their record on road safety” Cllr Glynane

DLD

The Leader of the Official Liberal Democrat Opposition at County Hall, Cllr Brendan Glynane, has today attacked comments made by the Conservative Police and Crime Commissioner on road deaths in Northamptonshire.

Cllr Glynane said "Our Conservative PCC claims he is shocked by the level of road deaths in Northamptonshire. I do not see how he can be shocked as he was a senior officer working with the Conservative administration at County Hall when they refused to fund the Casualty Reduction Partnership. The Liberal Democrats repeatedly told the Conservatives that this would lead to more dangerous roads, but we were completely ignored."

"The Conservative PCC was sat in several Council meetings where I personally called for speed cameras to be switched back on in questions, motions and budgets. He heard my repeated requests for action, and the example of Conservative-run Oxfordshire, who had switched cameras off and 6 months later had to switch them back on after a big spike in people killed and seriously injured on the roads."

"To pretend now that this is a new problem that he know nothing about and that the Conservatives have nothing to do with it is astonishing. The Tories can not whitewash their record on road safety. Whilst I welcome any moves to save lives and improve safety on our roads I only wish he had used his influence with the County Hall Conservatives at the time. If he had maybe some of the tragedies that have occurred might have been prevented."
