Liberal Democrats welcome Tory U-turn over help for transport costs for job-seekers
Liberal Democrat Transport & Economy spokesman, Towcester Councillor Chris Lofts, has welcomed news that the County Council is to pilot a transport scheme to help jobseekers in rural areas to get to job interviews.
Councillor Chris Lofts said that "I suggested looking into a very similar scheme 6 months ago but was shouted down by the Conservatives. I am glad that they have now listened to what I, and fellow Liberal Democrat Councillors, have been saying. People in the division I represent have told me of the struggle with transport costs when looking for jobs. I hope that this pilot scheme can be developed further and rolled out across the County. It is a shame though that the Conservatives let partisan politics get in the way of doing this last May- many more people could have been helped."
"I would also like to see a specific focus on youth unemployment as well. We know how hard it is for young people at the moment and they are often amongst those struggling most to get to interviews and work placements. I hope the Conservatives will listen to what we've said and improve this scheme to break down barriers people face in finding a job."
