“Lib Dems call for end to Sekhemka speculation”

Northampton Liberal Democrats have called for an end to the speculation about a sale of the ancient Egyptian Sekhemka statue from Northampton's Museum.

"Once again the Conservative administration has dragged the town headlong into a course of action that residents don't support, because they refuse to listen." Commented Brendan Glynane, who proposed the motion. "Many people in Northampton want to keep the statue, but the Conservatives didn't listen. Groups working with the Museum tell us that it can't be sold anyway, because the terms of the gift only last while it's on display in Northampton - but the Conservatives do not listen."

Mr. Mackintosh and his slap-dash administration have risked the loss of an invaluable piece of history for potentially absolutely no benefit - because they think there is no point in hearing what residents have to say.

Local Liberal Democrats are calling on all Councillors to represent the people of Northampton ahead of their parties - and tell bosses at the Guildhall it's time to end the speculation, clear up the mess, and keep the Sekhemka statue on display in Northampton where it belongs.
