Free school meals “a huge boon for working families” – Cllr. Brendan Glynane

Brendan Glynane, Leader of the Lib Dem group on Northamptonshire County Council, has welcomed the announcement that Liberal Democrats in government have secured funding for free school meals for all children of infant school age.

"This is a huge success by Nick Clegg and his team in government" Commented Brendan. "Studies, pilots and the example of other countries have shown us repeatedly that universal free school meals at a young age greatly boosts attainment across the board. It also ensures that all children - irrelevant of their situation at home - get a hot, nutritious meal once a day."

The policy continues the Lib Dem record of delivering a better start for children across the UK. Since entering government, and despite the desperate financial situation, the Liberal Democrats have delivered billions of pounds of extra funding into early years education through the pupil premium - including over £17,400,000 in Northamptonshire this year alone - ended immoral childhood detention, increased flexibility in parental leave and delivered free nursery places for thousands and thousands of two year olds. All on top of pulling the lowest paid members of our communities out of paying income tax altogether, and putting £600 back in the pocket of tens of millions of working people.

"As well as making sure that all children have the best chance in life - and a fair start - this policy will save parents up for £400 per year per child. For many parents, that extra money could be a lifeline in tough times. I am so proud that the Liberal Democrats in government are continuing to build a fairer society, even as the party takes a central role in rebuilding the wrecked economy this government inherited." Brendan concluded.
