“Conservative record on schools is nothing to be ‘proud’ of” Cllr Brendan Glynane
The Leader of the Official Liberal Democrat Opposition at County Hall, Cllr Brendan Glynane, has slammed the Conservative administration after they responded to questions from Cllr Glynane on their shocking placements in school league tables published by OFSTED.
Cllr Glynane was speaking after figures emerged that showed only 46% of children attended secondary schools rated "good" or "outstanding" in the county. Northamptonshire was ranked 133rd out of 155 authorities, and that only 59% of children attended primary schools in the same categories - placing Northamptonshire 20th from the bottom of OFSTED's list.
Cllr Glynane said "Any way you cut it this is a shocking indictment of their record of failure. The Conservatives have nothing to be "proud" of, no matter what their Cabinet Member might say. Northamptonshire. His excuses that the low placings were because the schools that are not performing well are the ones OFSTED inspects ignores the fact that this will be the case for every other authority!"
"Northamptonshire Tories are failing children and their families in our county. Not only are children more likely to go to a school that is not good or outstanding than most other areas in the country, but GCSE results are still under the national average after 8 years of Conservative rule. How anyone can say that this is a record to be 'proud' of, as the Conservative Cabinet Member did, is beyond me. The truth is that the Tories have let down our schools, our children and our future, and no amount of Tory spin can disguise the facts."
